Episode 5: Black History Month 2021, Part 1

In celebration of the now-international holiday of Black History Month, we share some of the very talented black performers without whom much great music would never have been possible. Celebrate these amazing people and learn a bit about them as we once again share the love.

Episode 6: Black History Month 2021, Part 2

Part 2 of 4 in the episode series celebrating Black History Month 2021 - There Was a Time when Nat King Cole was Unforgettable and Ella Fitzgerald asked Louis Armstrong to "Dream a Little Dream of Me." The dream lives on as the years go by, and Rock & Roll enter the equation joined quickly by Motown.

Episode 7: Black History Month 2021, Part 3

Part 3 of 4 in the episode series celebrating Black History Month 2021 - when Desmond Dekker and his Aces told the ancient story of The Israelites, Prince was always an Artist by any other name, and Isaac Hayes poured out his heart in "I Stand Accused"

Episode 8: Black History Month 2021, Part 4

Part 4 of 4 concluding the episode series celebrating Black History Month 2021 - Sam Cooke was very clear about what a Wonderful World he could imagine, but Ray Charles wanted to Wait Until the Midnight Hour (one of the first songs he ever recorded). Marvin Gaye talked to himself and made us want to ask, "What's Going On?" - these artists and their legendary contributions deserve celebration worldwide for Black History Month 2021.

Episode 9: Country Music - a Century of History, part 1

We thought we'd just skip merrily into the Country side, spend a little time, and come home refreshed after a lazy afternoon. Boy howdy, were we wrong! There is so much to unpack that we found flat amazing about the history of Country. This first episode takes us through folk and blues and soul and gospel and so much more!

Episode 10: Country Music - a Century of History, part 2

Our second part takes us down an amazing path, where Country music splits in two. Some of it comes 'round again in the '60s, some of it doesn't want anything to do with that Hippie folk-rock stuff. Some amazing samples and a few real-life stories.

NOTE: Folks, we might also call this "the dead air edition" - it's edited quite nicely but we do have some dropouts that you won't have to deal with in the next set of episodes. We apologize for the inconvenience!

Episode 11: Country Music - a Century of History, part 3

Country settles into a comfortable position across the charts as we move forward, and that Nashville sound, the Grand Ole Opry, and Blues and Soul all have a say in the direction we go from here. Soaring beautiful ballads by Ray Charles and the eccentricity of England Swings by Roger Miller.

Episode 12: Country Music - a Century of History, part 4

We thought we'd just skip merrily into the Country side, spend a little time, and come home refreshed after a lazy afternoon. Boy howdy, were we wrong! There is so much to unpack that we found flat amazing about the history of Country. This first episode takes us through folk and blues and soul and gospel and so much more!

Episode 13: Country Music - a Century of History, part 5

We thought we'd just skip merrily into the Country side, spend a little time, and come home refreshed after a lazy afternoon. Boy howdy, were we wrong! Episode 14: Fuzzy, Buzzy, Funny Sounds, part 1

How do artists make some of those wild sounds we hear in music today? Listener Robby Adcock challenged us to find out, and even gave us some great materials to start with! Join us for this four-part series and learn more about the science behind the magic: fuzz tone, layering, flanging and more!

Episode 15: Fuzzy, Buzzy, Funny Sounds, part 2

Listener Robby Adcock challenged us to find out, and even gave us some great materials to start with! Join us for this four-part series and learn more about the science behind the magic: fuzz tone, layering, flanging and more! We'll walk through Itchycoo park, Listen To The Music with the Doobie Brothers, and more.

Episode 16: Fuzzy, Buzzy, Funny Sounds, part 3

What do you do when Elvis won't hold still? Or your equipment gets left out in the rain? Or something just plain goes wrong yet somehow it sounds absolutely right? Well, you call that a breakthrough and come up with a way to make it great. We talk a lot about the way sounds we recognize in our favorite songs get made in the studio.

Episode 17: Fuzzy, Buzzy, Funny Sounds, part 4

Humans are complicated! That's why it was so hard for Pink Floyd to come up with a really good heartbeat or Peter Frampton to learn how to use those mouth-thingies that we all have to help his guitar talk. Join us on the last leg of our 4-part series on how some of our favorite songs get the sounds that they have.

    Episode 18: 1980, part 1

A lot was happening in 1980 as Disco shifted gears, Art Rock ushered in New Wave, and Pop started to experiment more with different styles and elements of all of these things. We loved doing a classic episode concept: take a year, and walk you through the big songs from that year.

    Episode 19: 1980, part 2

Even though the Internet in 1980 was more idea than reality, there was a lot going on in 1980 in music. Pop and rock still needed the spirit of radio to keep them alive (what a Rush!). Sounds started to change, and the US and the UK grew closer musically, whether it was from the untimely death of John Lennon or the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (MWOBHM) waiting in the wings, 1980 was a pivotal year for music.

    Episode 20: 1980, part 3

We continue our journey through the end of Disco and the beginning of "the Me decade". The 1980s needed a flashpoint, and this was definitely it, socially and politically. Though we always need a good laugh too: the movie "Airplane!" took off (tee hee) and people loved it. Join us for a talk through the times, over 40 years ago!

    Episode 21: 1980, part 4

We wrap up our run through 1980 and celebrate with a drink (a Pina Colada, of course, served up by Rupert Holmes). The Yank calls Brass in Pocket "Special" and the Limey reminds everyone to get into the groove, enjoy your favorite music, and feel completely free (and shake a leg, get up and dance!).

    Episode 22: Beginnings & Endings, part 1

2020 was rough, but in 2021, Life's Been Good anyway. We look at memorable, interesting, and fun beginnings and endings to famous songs.

    Episode 23: Beginnings & Endings, part 2

By the time you left 2020 for 2021, you were probably asking yourself, "Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?" If you were caught in a landslide, with no escape from reality, we wouldn't blame you. Spend time with us to talk about some great beginnings and endings to your favorite songs or songs you've never heard before.

    Episode 24: Beginnings & Endings, part 3

Suddenly vinyl is back! And now the old folks have the joy of explaining to young people that some record players would automatically lift and return the player arm when the album got to the end, while other record players would just let the stylus flap back and forth against the edge of the record label, looping through empty slack in the needle groove.

Except when The Beatles decided to fill that groove with something groovy, hidden right there at the end (and now returned in digital form)

    Episode 25: Beginnings & Endings, part 4

All good things must come to an end, but this end of the Beginnings and Endings leaves you with a sneak peek and a new beginning: the show's next topic! In between those things is an ending episode with a middle full of great musical beginnings and endings. Confused? It'll all make sense in the end.

Episode 26: Dream Songs, part 1

Songs about Dreams and Dreaming, from Elvis telling you where to go (in a nice way!) to Oasis reminding you not to stop until you get there. These are inspirational, sometimes surreal, and definitely dreamy.
Well, mostly. It is Halloween soon.

Episode 27: Dream Songs, part 2

Sometimes a Daydream Believer can think that Life is But a Dream, and Dream On. We won't make that mistake - it's hard to stay awake when Roy Orbison is singing a Dream Song, but it's easy to be excited about sharing all these great tunes with you and telling you the history behind them.

Episode 28: Dream Songs, part 3

We enjoy the lighter side of dreams, with The Monkees and Weird Al, and Bobby Darin, the man gifted with two first names. This is a chance to enjoy your favorite dream songs or go out to our YouTube playlist from this episode to be motivated and inspired.

Episode 29: Dream Songs, part 4

Did the dark side of that last episode scare you? It's okay, we bring this journey in for a safe, secure landing as we move through the stuff of dreams. Mister Sandman may not have liked Roy Orbison calling him a candy-colored clown, and Enter Sandman may have been a tale of candy-colored revenge, Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, the Mamas and the Papas, and Pink Floyd letting Roger Waters run amok with a dream of future history from long ago.
